Both Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II [iTunes links] — two games from one of the most revered console game franchises of all time — are available for purchase in the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iTouch right now.

We knew they were coming a while ago, but we didn’t know the pricing. Each game costs $8.99 and features upgraded graphics similar to those found on the Sony PSP versions released a couple years ago. Both titles debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in the late 1980s.

Note that the App Store received the Japanese version ofFinal Fantasy II, not the American one. Japan’s Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the United States for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, but this is the original Final Fantasy II that wasn’t released in the States until much later — confusing, we know.

If you’re not familiar with the Final Fantasy series, it’s one of the seminal franchises of Japanese role-playing games. Final Fantasy games involve a lot of random strategic battles with monsters in addition to some dialogue and exploration. They’re difficult, but they’re rewarding if you’re willing to invest some serious time.

Chances are these early titles won’t appeal to people who aren’t already fans. Developer Square Enix is banking on nostalgia here. Folks who aren’t fans might want to wait for the later, more accessible games in the series to hit the iPhone OS — not that anything’s been announced yet.

The App Store has no shortage of IM apps in its catalog, but as we all know, not all of them offer a good experience. The official paid version of AIM is a bit bloated and slow to send messages; IM+, along with Nimbuzz, Palringo and fring all have terrible user interfaces. Beejive IM is pretty much the only exception here – loads quickly, has reliable Push Notifications, a nice interface, landscape support, among other things.

We’ve always wondered why Meebo, the king of in-browser IM, never released a native iPhone app. We do not have to wonder any longer as Meebo has just released a Native iPhone app.
Best of all, it’s free.

Our initial impressions of the app:
- It launches FAST. Faster than any other IM app.
- The interface is really nice and clean, although not better than BeejiveIM in my humble opinion. Still, it’s not ugly or bad by any stretch of the imagination.
- Push Notifications are supported, however Meebo does not state how long it will keep you signed in for.
- Works on Landscape!
- We haven’t seen any ads yet, which is pretty surprising since this is a free app.

I’m moving this to the front page and using it as my main IM app. And I think you should, too. Great, great job, Meebo. You are now the king of IM on the iPhone, too. Update: Okay, I have been using this app all day and I have a few more things to add. This app does not support file transfers. I had not realized that until I tried to send a picture to a friend, only to find out the app has no such feature. This might be a deal breaker for some. The app is still superb, but no file transfers is rather disappointing.

BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 15, 2010 — Today at Mobile World Congress 2010, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the next generation of Windows® Phones, Windows Phone 7 Series. With this new platform, Microsoft offers a fresh approach to phone software, distinguished by smart design and truly integrated experiences that bring to the surface the content people care about from the Web and applications. For the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience on a mobile phone, exclusively on Windows Phone 7 Series. Partners have already started building phones; customers will be able to purchase the first phones in stores by holiday 2010.

“Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.”

Designed for Life in Motion

With Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft takes a fundamentally different approach to phone software. Smart design begins with a new, holistic design system that informs every aspect of the phone, from its visually appealing layout and motion to its function and hardware integration. On the Start screen, dynamically updated “live tiles” show users real-time content directly, breaking the mold of static icons that serve as an intermediate step on the way to an application. Create a tile of a friend, and the user gains a readable, up-to-date view of a friend’s latest pictures and posts, just by glancing at Start.

Every Windows Phone 7 Series phone will come with a dedicated hardware button for Bing, providing one-click access to search from anywhere on the phone, while a special implementation of Bing search provides intent-specific results, delivering the most relevant Web or local results, depending on the type of query.

Windows Phone 7 Series creates an unrivaled set of integrated experiences on a phone through Windows Phone hubs. Hubs bring together related content from the Web, applications and services into a single view to simplify common tasks. Windows Phone 7 Series includes six hubs built on specific themes reflecting activities that matter most to people:

•

People. This hub delivers an engaging social experience by bringing together relevant content based on the person, including his or her live feeds from social networks and photos. It also provides a central place from which to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live in one step.

•

Pictures. This hub makes it easy to share pictures and video to a social network in one step. Windows Phone 7 Series also brings together a user’s photos by integrating with the Web and PC, making the phone the ideal place to view a person’s entire picture and video collection.

•

Games. This hub delivers the first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile. With more than 23 million active members around the world, Xbox LIVE unlocks a world of friends, games and entertainment on Xbox 360, and now also on Windows Phone 7 Series.

•

Music + Video. This hub creates an incredible media experience that brings the best of Zune, including content from a user’s PC, online music services and even a built-in FM radio into one simple place that is all about music and video. Users can turn their media experience into a social one with Zune Social on a PC and share their media recommendations with like-minded music lovers. The playback experience is rich and easy to navigate, and immerses the listener in the content.

•

Marketplace. This hub allows the user to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games.

•

Office. This hub brings the familiar experience of the world’s leading productivity software to the Windows Phone. With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents. With the additional power of Outlook Mobile, users stay productive and up to date while on the go.

Availability

Partners from around the world have committed to include Windows Phone 7 Series in their portfolio plans. They include mobile operators AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and manufacturers Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp., HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm Inc. The first phones will be available by holiday 2010. Customers who would like to receive additional information about Windows Phone 7 Series and be notified when it is available can register at http://www.windowsphone7series.com.

Microsoft has just ended their press conference in Barcelona, Spain, And they’re taking a moment to do a Q&A session. I am transcribing these questions live for you to read them.

“With such a proliferation of platforms, all of which are free, will microsoft will ever reconsider its policy of charging for licenses?”

“There’s something easy to understand about our model: We build a model, we sell them. We only have one or two competitors who are on a model of free, and that might work for them. Our model is clear and direct, we plan on staying on that model.”

“With windows phone 7 consistency, How are you going to allow your partners to differentiate themselves?”

“We make it so that the UI is extensible rather than replaced. The problem with replacing is that the UI ecosystem is fighting with each other. Having consistency provides an overall better user experience. But the UI is very extensible.” Surprising!

Ballmer: As an old-timer, let me remind you, maybe the first time I heard this discussion is when we moved from DOS to Windows, there was consistency about windows that we didnt have in DOS, turns everybody wound up creating a bigger pool of opportunity through that transition, I think when we look back 3 to 5 years from now we will see a lot of innovation and everybody will be pleased we could do that on top of a higher foundation instead of having everybody replumb the lower level guts of the user interface”

Are you going to support Adobe Flash in any way?

“We don’t have Adobe Flash support in Windows Phone 7 out of the gate.”

Steve Ballmer adds “We have no objection to Adobe Flash support ”

“Im afraid that’s all we have for time, thank you so much for attending!”

After years of releasing essentially the same OS, competition started innovating. When the iPhone was announced, Steve Ballmer laughed at it, saying Microsoft had sold millions of phones while Apple, at the time, had sold zero. Fast forward to today, and things are completely different: Windows Mobile has found its way to irrelevancy while millions of customers are using, and loving, their new Apple or Android handsets.

The line between consumer and business is blurring. Turns out suits also like games on their phones. It’s not all about work — Our phone is now our life, and we all know life isn’t all about work.

The competition is here and it’s fierce. Apple and Google released new operating systems that are a joy to use and consumers love. Suddenly Microsoft found itself in big trouble, finally starting to realize that updating an OS isn’t about skinning a 10+ year old codebase and calling it a new release. It’s like they say, you can put lipstick on a pig, but at the end of the day, it’s still a pig.

It’s no wonder Microsoft wants a piece of the market. After all, there are more phones in the world than there are PCs. And guess what? phones are PCs.

So why has Microsoft been releasing junk all this time? It’s inexcusable, really, but there are three reasons why:

First – We all know that lack of competition hinders innovation. Always.

Second – Microsoft had actually a poor understanding of the market and the potential it has, and perhaps most importantly;

Third - The Windows Mobile division lacked talent, and teams were ultimately turning great R&D material into uninspired products. Here’s a great example of this:

Right before the iPhone was announced, Microsoft was hard at work on the next major version of Windows Mobile, codename Photon. It was to finally replace the outdated kernel found since Pocket PC 2002. Microsoft however, had promised the OS was designed in a way that would merge touchscreen and non-touch screen versions into one single OS. Wait, let’s stop right there. One OS that would merge touch screen UI with non-touch UI? Yeah, exactly.

The iPhone was Microsoft’s wake up call. with its launch, it became clear that a phone with a Touch Screen needed a specific, touch-oriented user interface. And it didn’t need to suck. Which was exactly the opposite of what they were building at the time!

So they went back to the drawing board. Steve Ballmer got more involved, Microsoft started looking for talent, and even spent half a billion dollars to buy Danger, the makers of the Sidekick.

If spending half a billion dollars on a company doesn’t show you’re serious, I don’t know what does. Sadly, The acquisition was a complete failure. Complete. Failure. All of the original employees are now working somewhere else, the sidekick brand lost a lot of its value, and we won’t even go over the data loss fiasco that happened last year.

Hopefully, Microsoft has learned their lesson. Windows Mobile is at stake. If it wants to dominate the market, it needs a complete overhaul, right now. And from the reports we’ve been seeing, it actually looks like they’re doing just that.

We will see if Microsoft is now ready to compete next week during Mobile World Congress. DeviceWay will be there and will bring you every detail.

Google is making a big deal about its new phone, the Nexus One. It even dedicated a spot promoting it on its homepage, a spot that is considered by many to be the web’s most expensive, if not priceless, ad spot.

Dont get us wrong, we love Android. But we think Google has made some poor strategy decisions that are ultimately going to prevent the product from becoming a success. See why after the jump:

1. The Price is too high

Sure, the first-gen iPhone’s ridiculous initial price tag did not keep people from camping out of stores to get one, but Google is NOT Apple. Its sad, but people expect Apple products to come with a premium price tag. Google has a tradition of buying companies that used to charge for their products and make them available for free.

People expect Google products to be cheap or free. Remember about all the rumors surrounding the Nexus One’s price? No? We’ll refresh your memory: It was rumored that the Nexus One would be available for either very cheap or free, unlocked.

Sure, you could argue that the $179 subsidized price is more than reasonable, but little do you know, you’re still getting shafted. Which brings us to our next point:

2. A Ridiculous Early Termination Fee

Normally when you buy a phone at a subsidized price, you will sign a contract. This contract locks you with the carrier and allows them to offer you the device at a discount. $175 early termination fees were the standard until recently, when Verizon started charging $350 if you bought a smartphone. People all over the country, including me, were not happy with that change. But google has managed to out-do verizon and charge a ridulous, unheard of $550 early termination fee. That’s right, the early termination fee now costs more than unlocked the phone itself.

3. Abysmal Customer Service

Customer Service (Or lack thereof)

Not all companies are perfect. Yes, not even Google. If there is one area that Google severely lacks across all of its products, it’s customer service. Even they admit it. But if I am paying $500+ for a phone, it better have good support and customer service.

The forums pictured above are flooded with user complaints. Google does not provide support phone numbers and T-mobile representatives are neither trained nor authorized to help you with any issues with your phone. You are stuck with the forums and e-mail support. Yup, that’s it.

If your phone breaks, you cannot even bring it to a store to get it fixed. In fact, you can’t even buy the phone at the store. Which bring us to the next point:

4. No in-store purchase, retail presence

I love shopping online. I do it all the time and love the experience. But sometimes there is nothing like getting a closer, personal look. Also, if you’re like me, you simply can’t wait to get your hands on your new toy. I could have easily ordered my iPhone 3G[S] online but chose to drive down to the Apple store and get it right away. Google has chosen to sell the phone online, and online only.

A lot of people are hearing about the Nexus One and are heading to the T-mobile store to see one in person, only to find out you can only get it online. Google, you fail on that one.

5. Android is still not as user-friendly as iPhone

Android still has a way to go when it comes to UI. Dont get us wrong, it’s perfectly fine for us geeks. But android’s UI still needs improvement for the average joe user. Apple has spent years of research & development to develop iPhone’s UI, and it shows:

Overall, We think Android as a platform is on the right track, but we think Google still has a way to go if it really wants to challenge the iPhone’s dominance.
